In a wonderful backward flowing narrative, artist and film maker Amie Siegel tracks the fortunes of an office chair, from discarded reject to star of the designer-furniture market in the West. Provenance, 2013, most pointedly shows how different ideas about an objects value can coexist in the world. These chairs and other pieces of furniture were designed by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret in the 1950’s for the Punjab capital building in Chandigarh, India, in the spirit of the Nehru’s post-partition modern city. Now many of these chairs have been replaced with something more ergonomically friendly by office workers. Concurrently, these chairs sell for thousands of dollars in the United States and Europe, where the chairs are prized as a symbol of an architects genius, and are accumulated by connoisseurs as an illustration of wealth, class and taste. One mans trash is another mans treasure…indeed!
